"Impermanence" 2022-2024 Exhibited at The Art Center, Dover, NH
paper, plaster, saplings, paint
This piece helped me grieve, love, heal, discover, adapt, remember, laugh, let go, imagine, create, finish, begin again, and continue on.
I began this campfire, this labor of love, in 2022. It is mostly made of paper, paper that I've altered. I used letters- some from friends who have passed, my drawings and journal pages using various techniques.
To make the colorful campfire logs, I tenderly layered paper strips using my own paper mache mixture of water, flour, and salt and when dry, painted each layer. The pinecones I made from painting, cutting, folding, and gluing paper. For the smoke curls, I began with the rectangular shape and marbled its surface using Japanese suminagashi, and then cut enough of them into interlocking spiral curls to reach the 15' tall ceiling.
